So yesterday, we closed on our first home - a 1958 Tom Gist custom built home. Rachel picked up the keys, and went back to work. Today, after Nathan got off from work, we went over to the Gist house at around 8:30am and began to do some demolition to some of the non-original parts of the house. Under the white carpet of the family room, there is this gorgeous polished brick. The brick has fairly wide grout, and it has been grounded down to be even with the grout, then was sealed. It's gorgeous, isn't it? This a better shot of the brick under the tiled entryway. Why would someone cover this up? Next, we worked on removing the white carpet in the guest room and guest bathroom. Yes, there was white carpet in the bathroom. Gross. This is the tile that was underneath the carpet. The guest room was likely a carport in the original house, but was added on shortly after the original owners bought the house. From our understanding, it was a butler's quarters. Crazy! Carpet removed. Although the tile is nice, quite a bit of it is cracked, so we will have to replace it with something period appropriate. White carpet removed from the guest room. This also may not be salvageable, but there is concrete underneath, which we could have polished. We will see once we meet with the Tucson Historic Preservation Society. Almost done with the family room. It was a busy morning. A dip in the pool was well deserved.
